A Study of the Book of James

February 7 - March 21, 2010

Like the numerous energy drinks on the market today, there is sustenance from God’s Word that we can drink in to fuel us for living a healthy Christian life. In this series, we will study the book of James, which offers guidance that speaks to the necessity of applying scriptural truths that can lead to our own wellness. Handling temptation, growing through trials, avoiding class bias and favoritism, understanding how ‘good works’ mesh with the faith experience, controlling the tongue and maintaining a verbal discipline, building a relationship with God through prayer – all of us need the wisdom and fuel of scripture to strengthen our resolve in moving toward Christ-likeness in these areas. This will be a most meaningful and powerful growth opportunity for us at Saint James, especially during this upcoming season of Lent when we focus on our own Spiritual Growth.

Part 1 - ‘The Best Way to Live’ James 1: 13-27

God’s Word provides us with an accurate reflection of who we truly are. We are responsible for giving in to temptation or things that separate us from God. Believers must learn to fully trust in God’s Word and the reality that God provides for us only good and perfect gifts that will lead to better lives.

Part 2 - ‘Trials and Testing’ James 1: 2-8

We all face trials of one sort or another. We do not always know why we face the trials, this scripture says we should consider it a joy. That isn’t easy although trials may help us make clear what we believe and what is the foundation of our faith.

Part 3 - ‘No Class’ James 2: 1-13

Each of us, at some time in life, may be categorized into a sub-class of society. It may feel good or it may not! Scripture tells us we must not show favoritism. Christ-followers believe the church should be a place and body that is classless.

Part 4 - ‘Faith Works’ James 2: 14-19, 24 & 26

How do we understand the scripture saying people are justified by what they do and not by faith alone. How does this fit with what we know about faith by grace. A dynamic faith includes a third dimension: the will. This depth of faith shows itself outwardly through good works – demonstration that faith conversion has taken place.

Part 5 - ‘Open Wide and Say AHHH!’ James 3: 1-13

The tongue wields amazing power. It can speak works of affirmation and love and can also speak words that hurt and leave scars. Soul damage can be done to people that Jesus gave His life for. The reality is that what comes out of our mouths is an indication of what’s going on inside.

Part 6 - ‘The Center of the YOU-NIVERSE’ James 4: 1-10

In our “it’s all about me” society, we find little need to exercise control over our impulses. There is a difference between being the ‘center of’ and being ‘centered in’. We need to submit to God and be ‘centered in’ Him. God provides what we need to stand up to the challenges and temptations.

Part 7 - ‘Why Pray?’ James 5: 7-8, 13-18

Is Prayer important enough to take the time to go to God with requests, thanks, fears, and doubts? Does God even hear our prayers? Yes, to both of these! Be aware of His presence. God accepts our prayers and it allows us to focus on God in relation to our humanness; it frees us to release all that we are to God. He listens and loves.
